Physiological and agronomical characteristic changes in soybean (Glycine max L.) under drought conditions

Two experiments were conducted at the screenhouse of the Department of Agronomy, University of the Philippines at Los Banos (UPLB) and one field experiment at the UPLB Central Experiment Station (CES) from February to September 1993. Two soybean cultivars namely BPI Sy-4 (broader leaves) and EG Sy-19 (narrow leaves) were used. The general objective of this study was to determine the influence of drought stress on the physiological and agronomical characteristics of these two soybean cultivars and their implication to drought resistance. Physiological characteristics of both cultivars such as photosynthetic activity, transpiration, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2, nitrate reductase activity, and leaf water potential were reduced by drought stress. The same trend was observed for the agronomic characteristics as indicated by the reduction in leaf area, shoot and root dry weight, dry matter production, plant height, number of branches, number of pods, 100-seed weight and grain yield of both cultivars with drought stress. Drought stress also shortened days to maturity. The same results was found whether stress was imposed at vegetative or reproductive stage and whether the plants were grown under screenhouse or field conditions
