Effect of solution temperature on growth and shoot nitrate content of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in solution culture (NFT)
1991
Mondher, S.
Crisphead lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa L., cvs. "Marbello" and "Bastion") were grown in nutrient solution culture (NFT) from 15 November, 1990 to 3 April 1991 at ph 6.0 and EC 2.0mS in anheated glassehouse. Different solution temperature treatments were applied in three successive experiments over a period from 15 November 1990 to 3 April 1991 (10-15-20) C, 10.5-16.5-22.5 C, and 12-18-24 C respectively, the lowest of the three temperature values being the control. Heated solutions produced significantly higher shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight and shoot watered content in both cultivars. The number of leaves and water uptake increased with solution temperature. Increased temperature had no significant influence on shoot nitrate content in both the cultivars. Avarage nitrate concentration did not exceeded 83mg NO3/Kg of shoot fresh weight. Solution temperature affected qrowth and tissue nitrate concentration differently in to the cultivars.
