A multidisciplinary approach for selecting study areas: the case of CIAT's savannas program
1993
Rivas R, L. | Pereira, G.
The study is divided into two parts. The first describes the selection of large agroecosystems, where CIAT will focus its work on research and natural resource management. The second part presents an analysis of secondary socioeconomic information on four regions of the Brazilian Cerrados (Campo Grande, Uberlandia, Rondonopolis and Rio Verde), designated as having very high priority within a joint EMBRAPA/CIAT project. The socioeconomic analysis is an integral part of a Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA), currently being implemented to obtain technical and socioeconomic information as a basis for selecting the region(s) where EMBRAPA and CIAT will carry out their research and management of natural resources in the Cerrados, emphasizing the development of sustainable, mixed agricultural production systems. The objective of the socioeconomic analysis is to characterize and describe preselected regions in terms of their similarities/differences and to identify relevant aspects for further exploration in the RRA.
