In field experiments 2 methods of sowing broad beans of Alfred variety with different sowing rates were studied. Indices of photosynthetic activity are considered by the periods of development. It has been found that the sowing of broad beans as a photosynthesizing system functions most intensively in II and III periods - blossoming, fruit formation and fruit growing. During this time photosynthetic potential makes up 60%, and accumulation of wet and dry biomass - 64% of the total during the growing period. In 1990 nitrogen accumulation in the biomass made up 250-300 kg/ha, with lack of moisture in 1989 it was 1.5 - 2 times lower, the yield of seed became 4 times lower. With growing broad beans with limited growth (Alfred variety) in Central region of Nonchernozem zone of Russia, the sowing rate of 0.6 and 0.8 mln seed per 1 ha respectively with wide-row sowing and usual drilled sowing is recommended. In 1990 with favourable supply of moisture the yield of seed in these variants made up 37.6 and 38.0 hw/ha, the collection of protein with seed yield - 970-980 kg/ha
