Three novel cDNA clones (API-13, API-3 and API-6) coding for aspartic proteinase inhibitor homologues were isolated from a potato tuber cDNA library. Northern blot hybridization of total RNA, isolated from leaves after mechanical wounding showed that synthesis of aspartic proteinase inhibitors started to increase within second up to the third day after wounding. Additionally, a gold-immuno labeling of thin sections was used to localize the aspartic proteinase inhibitors in potato root tips. It is shown that they are located mainly in intercellular space and Golgi apparatus.
