In field trials, the effect of lucerne undersowing (cvs. Plava, Nitranka, Rod-D, Regia) into maize for silage (cvs. CE-185, TO-MV-335, TO-MV-460) on the forage yield in sowing years has been studied. Besides the yield, also selected factors of yield structure and chemical composition have been evaluated. On the average, early cv. CE-185 gave a lower forage yield than middle early cv. TO-MV-335 and late cv. TO-MV-460. Early hybrids were less yielding than the other cultivars, especially in the years with favourable conditions. Though the effect of lucerne on the yield was insignificant, with regard to the contribution of lucerne, maize and its cobs to the total yield, it can be concluded that cv. Rod-D competed maize the most. Out of the maize cultivars tested, early cv. CE-185 was affected by undersowing competition relatively least. This cultivar also exerted less unfavourable effect on undersowing. Lucerne undersowing reduced forage yield in sowing year on the average by 18 %, cobs yield by 47 %, plant height by 20 %. On the contrary, it increased the content of crude protein by 7 % and decreased P and Ca contents in dry matter.
