Breeding programme of gladiolus was experimented in order to study the improvement of some introduced varieties and the characteristics of progeny: A guide line in selecting cut-flower varieties for commercial purposes in Thailand. Forty one varieties introduced from U.S.A. were planted, and only sixteen varieties were selected and used as parents. The methods of the study were crossing, reciprocal cross, and selfing. Accordingly, out of 114 experimented combinations, 100 combinations were successful and 14 combinations were unsuccessful. Average fruit size was 1.58x2.94 cm. The average maturity period of seed after breeding was 29.23 days. Average number of seeds per fruit was 47.12. The percentage of seed germination was 44.71. Average number of corms per fruit was 9.06 while the number of cormels per fruit was 18.15. Average corm size was 1.37 cm. The percentage of corms and cormels per seed was 55.10. The percentage of the germination of corms and cormels was 52.80. Average plant height was 48.31 cm. Average number of corms per fruit was 14.12 while the number of cormels per fruit was 169.87. The percentage of corms and cormels was 56.23. Average corm size was 3.62 cm. Average number of cormels per corm was 13.05. Fifty one combinations and 307 hybrids could produce flowers. The percentage of flowers per corm was 12.50. Average duration of flower harvesting was 115.58 days. Average floret size was 9.25x8.78 cm. Average flower height was 76.42 cm. Average number of florets per spike was 8.34. From the study thirty two progenies were proved to yield good quality flowers and seem to have good resistance to pests and diseases.
