Seed of three rice varieties were used for fumigation for the control of seedborne fungi and insect infestation. The fumigants used were ethylenedibromide (EDB), methyl iodide (MI), phosphine (PH3) and pure hydrochloric acid (HCI) vapour at different doses. In all the treatments incidence of field fungi including the pathogenic ones and storage fungi were reduced significantly. HCl vapour treatment was found to be the most promising in respect of control of seedborne fungi. Germination and seedling vigour were also improved significantly in case of HCl, PH3 and EDB treatments. In stored seed lots infestation with Sitotroga cerealella (Oliver) was effectively controlled in treatments with MI, PH3 and HCl vapour.
