Jute seeds (Corchorus capsularis) were crushed finely and its oil was extracted with petroleum spirit (B.P. 80-100 deg. C) This oil was treated with alkali along with necessary fillers and a detergent like Nonidet P 40 had been made. Moisture content, pH values, specific gravity, weight per ml, free alkali, saponifiable matter and surface tension of the detergent were determined. Strength of the detergent as washing agent, emulsifier was studied and the quality of the detergent had been ascertained. Jute seed oil detergent gave good cleansing action like the detergents available in the market.
