Desmecht, D. (Liege Univ., Sart Tilman (Belgium). Faculte de Medecine Veterinaire. Service d'Anatomie Pathologique)
Up to now, assessment of respiration in animals remain exlusively based on the study of lung-related values such as breathing frequency, depth of inspiration, degree of cyanosis, pleural pressure, repiratory flows and arterial pressures in oxygen or carbon dioxide. In this context, however, our knowledge of respiratory muscle structure and function remains very restricted. The present review aimed at making the reader familiar with the fundamental structural and functional data controlling the musculo-skeletal apparatus that ensures adequate ventilation of the lungs.
