Preliminary to a study on antigenic variability of BVD virus, we determined how many animals were, in fact, permanently infected, immunotolerant animals into herds which were diagnosed positive for an infection with BVD virus. Out of 3627 blood samples taken from 53 different herds, 52 animals were found positive after 2 consecutive tests done 3-4 weeks apart. In 28 of the 53 herds that we sampled for this survey, one or more IPI animals were detected. This survey shows that BVD virus is present in the whole selected area and that the prevalence of IPI animals in the 28 herds (53 percent of the sample) where one or more IPI animals were diagnosed, is 1.43 percent The average age of animals that show a persistent viraemia was 10.6 months in our sampling conditions.
