In 50 sows the plasma progesterone concentration between 24 to 48 hours after farrowing was measured. There was no relationship between the progesterone level post partum and the number of piglets born alive or dead, the number of piglets weaned, the length of the interval from weaning to the first oestrus and the pregnancy rate of the first insemination. Thus a rather high (more than 0.50 ng/ml) progesterone concentration post partum does not affect reproduction.
