Influence of scarification and prechilling on the germination of seeds of Pistacia lentiscus

Cleaned seeds of Pistacia lentiscus, a basic component of the vegetation of the Mediterranean maquis, collected at Villa Urbana (Oristano, Italy) were pretreated in different ways to remove any dormancy and to identify easily applicable treatments to improve the amount and speed of germination. Compared to the control, all of a series of scarification and prechilling treatments applied increased the speed of the germination process but did not affect the final germination percentage. Scarifying for 50 seconds was the simplest and quickest method of improving the speed of germination. Lacking an electrical scarifier, prechilling for 21 days, and perhaps for even shorter periods, can be an equivalent alternative procedure. Pretreatment of the seed can be particularly useful in spring but not in autumn sowings
