Seed storage behaviour of Michelia compressa (Max.) Sargent

Seeds of Michelia compressa, a subtropical broad-leaved tree, were reported to be recalcitrant and to lose viability when desiccated. We report here that M. compressa seeds can survive desiccation to a moisture content as low as 10 % (fresh weight basis). Even though germinability was better maintained at lower relative humidity and storage at - 20 deg C, the difference in seed germinability was not significant between relative humidities of 62 % and 35 %, and stored at either 15 deg C or 4 deg C for 9 to 12 months. When seeds were maintained at a relative humidity of 35 %, the decline in germinability was significantly greater for storage at 15 deg C and -20 deg C than at 4 deg C. This characteristic is not compatible with the definition of typical orthodox seeds. We suggest orthodox seed storage behaviour of M. compressa, but germinability at sub-zero storage temperatures was not necessarily better than at higher temperatures
