Dry seeds of Gossypium hirsutum, G. arboreum and G. herbaceum were implanted respectively by N+, H+ and Ar+ with 30keV, in six doses. The division index of root tip cells, the types and frequencies of nuclear aberration, micronucleus and chromosomal aberration in M1 generation were analysed. The cytogenetic effects of different ion beams and sensitivity of different cotton species to the three kinds of ion implantation were studied. The results showed that three kinds of ion implantation could induce significant nuclear aberration, micronuclei and chromosomal aberration. Frequency of chromosomal aberration induced by H+ was highest, by Ar+ the next. The highest rate of chromosomal bridges in chromosomal aberration induced by H+ was observed. The rate of lagging chromosome in chromosomal aberration induced by N+, Ar+ was higher than that induced by H+. The chromosomes of G. hirsutum to H+ and N+ implantation were more sensitive than those of G. arboreum and G. herbaceum. The dose-effect curve of the chromosomal aberration frequencies of root tip cells in G. hirsutum and G. herbaceum induced by three kinds of ion differed from that in G. arboreum
