The persistence of some cultivars of white clover related to the nitrogen fertilization
1995

The purpose of that study was to estimate the persistence of five different Polish clover cultivars in mixtures with grasses due to three levels of nitrogen fertilization : N=0 (without nitrogen), N=60 (60 kg of N/ha/year), N=120 (120 kg of N/ha/year). Experiment was carried out on the black loam soil in the Experimental Station Falenty near Warsaw in the years 1991-1994. On the base of these results it is possible to draw up a conclusion that persistence of Polish clover varieties is still very low. It depends on the nitrogen fertilization but even in treatment without nitrogen, when the percentage of white clover was very good in the first year after sowing, it has rapidly decreased in the following years. We can increase the persistence of clover by proper nitrogen strategy and by choosing the best companion grasses for clover but generally speaking it is very difficult to keep the content of white clover on the level of 20-30 per cent what is recommended for the good quality and feeding value of pasture forage
