Why we started with winter turnip rape (Brassica campestris) breeding at Jogeva
1995
Kalev, S. (Jogeva Plant Breeding Inst. Jogeva (Estonia))
Since 1993 Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute and Swaloef-Weibull AB have the co-operation agreement on winter turnip rape breeding. The main goal of the project is to develop new winter turnip rape varieties adapted to the Estonian soil and climatic conditions. There were established observation trials with 500 lines on 2 square m plots and yield trial with 98 lines on 10 sqaure m in 3 replication at Jogeva. Yield trials were sown also at Tartu and Jaeneda. Field observations were carried out all together 2927 times. GSL - paper test will be carried out. For harvesting time 25 % of plots sown in 1993 remained. Best plants were selected from plots and only 55 found to be suitable for further trials. New trials were established in August 1994. In autumn the plants were well developed and strong enough for overwintering
