Tamm, I. (Jogeva Plant Breeding Inst., Jogeva (Estonia))
The main breeding aims in oats breeding in Estonia have been for a long time high yielding capacity, good lodging and disease resistance, high protein and fat content. The new breeding aims are concerned with starting food oat's in Estonia. A good food oat's variety should have low husk %, high 1000 kernel weight, high hectolitre weight and short growing period. A special trial was carried out at Jogeva to find out new valuable initial breeding material for crossings in 1993-1994. 180 varieties and breeds from different countries - Belorussia, Sweden, Germany, England, Canada etc. were included into this trial. High yield potential demonstrated the varieties 'Ursus' and 'Dragon' from Poland, 'Gloral' from Belorussia, 'Alf' and 'Dachs' from Germany, breeds Hja 82371, Hja 86008 from Finland, Sv 91154, WW 17369 from Sweden and others
