Role of bee pollination in the fruit set and yield of self-fertile and self-sterile apple, sour cherry and plum cultivars

In the case of self-sterile apple, plum and sour cherry cultivars even partial limitation of effective duration of bee pollination significantly reduced fruit set and yield. Limitation resulted in a strong reduction for apple cultivars and for a self-sterile sour cherry even cv even if bee pollination was prevented from the 5-6th day of blooming only. In the case of a self-sterile plum cultivar, however, moderate limitation was not of significant influence but strong or complete limitation had as remarkable effect on yield like in the case of previous crops. Self-fertile cultivars can be sensitive to very strong or to complete limitation of bee pollination (sour cherry in this study), but other self-fertile crops or cultivars may be much less or absolutely not sensitive against the limitation (plums in this study). Yield seems to be more reliable measurement than fruit set when evaluating the sensitivity of cultivated plant species or cultivars to the limitation of effective duration of bee pollination
