Over the past years it has been the tendency- as a consequence of the market demand and cost sensitive management- to reduce fresh water consumption and to increase the utilization of secondary fibres. Both changes have an adverse effect on quality of the recycled water and might cause technological problems. The Paper Research Institute in collaboration with the Fuyfo Paper Mill has developed a three-year program enjoying the support of the Europe Union's COPERNICUS project. In the first part the available data were analyzed and expected changes will be estimated on this basis. Since the closure of the water system and the increase of waste paper content will raise the quantity of disturbing agents, new methods are be developed to reduce this effect. One of these methods is the chemical treatment of high consistency stock which has not been applied at the mill yet. In addition, laboratory trials were made to optimize the technological conditions - like stock preparation,to reduce the quantity of disturbing agents
