Normal diploid chromosome numbers and abnormalities in domestic mammals are summarized and classified into numerical and structural aberrations, mixed karyotypes and gonosome constitutions contrary to the phenotypical sex. Reports of human and animal cases are reviewed and compared, the biological and economical effects are also discussed. The summary of the results of our investigations includes the 1;29, 5;18 and 14;21 centric fusions and the 1;8;9 complex translocation, as well as different cases of mixed karyotypes (primary and secondary chimaerism, mosaicism) in cattle, 3 cases of XO mares, XX-sex reversal in a polled goat and in a llama, XX/XY chimaerism and XX-sex reversals in dogs. The eradication program against hereditary chromosome abnormalities in cattle (1;29 and 14;21 centric fusions) was highly effective in Hungary and a world-wide spread of the complex translocation was successfully prevented
