The effect of pine wilt disease on the seed production of Japanese black and red pines was examined with naturally-infested and artificially-infected pine trees. The pine trees that succumbed to pine wilt showed deterioration in cone and seed characteristics, for example, decreased cone size, occurrence of indehiscent cones, large ratios of empty seeds, little seed viability, and so forth. The greater the host resistance, however, the slower the disease progress, which in turn resulted in less influence on cone and seed developments, and thereby increased the possibility of leaving a next generation
