Regeneration behaviors of tree species of secondary stands regenerated on sites disturbed by typhoon 15: Based on the proportion of advanced regeneration, growth rate, and seedling density in closed mature stands

The number of trees were investigated in secondary stands regenerated on sites disturbed by Typhoon 15 in 1954, and the number of trees and the number of seedlings were investigated in closed mature stands. The number of trees were investigated in gaps created in the mature forest. For secondary stands 216 trees were cut and 156 trees were cored to determine tree age and to analyze growth patterns. Trees of secondary stands were composed of both advanced regeneration and second growth, and species composing secondary stands were different in the proportion of advanced regeneration (PARG). These species were different also in the density of seedlings in closed mature stands. Three species groups could be classified based upon PARG and the seedling density. Species of Type A and PARGs of more than 40% and seedling densities of more than 30%/100 square meter. Species of Type C and PARGs of less than 5% and seedling densities of less than 0.2/100 square meter. Species of Type B were intermediate in these two features; thus they were between Types A and C. Species of Type A had greater percentage occurrences in closed mature stands and in gaps, whereas species of Type C had smaller percentage occurrences in closed mature stands and in gaps. Species of Type C tended to occur more frequently in secondary stands than in closed mature stands. Species of Type B had intermediate patterns of occurrences between species of Types A and C. Species of Type A had slower growth rate than species of Type C, indicating that there might be trade-off relationships between shade tolerance and growth rate. It was concluded that secondary stands were composed of non-pioneer species such as Type A, pioneer species such as Type C, and intermediate species such as Type B
