System analysis and simulation-based approach in the extrapolation of rice environment
1995
Pascual, C.M. (Mariano Marcos State Univ., Batac, Ilocos Norte (Philippines))
The environment of Batac, Ilocos Norte [Philippines] was studied to characterize, describe, and extrapolate rice environments using geographic information system (GIS) and Modules of an Annual Crop Simulators (MACROS). A strategic rice on-site (SRO) area of 5,132 ha or 33 percent of the total land use area of Batac was classified as suitable for rice production. The contiguous 19-ha rainfed lowland rice-growing watershed studied had no access to irrigation systems. However, rainfed farmers performed approved soil and water management practices to provide rainwater conservation facilities and small structures for sustainability. Risk assessment of rainfed lowland rice-growing watershed made possible by the application of GIS and simulation models proved useful to farmers, researchers, extension workers, and land-use planners
