Approximately 8500 accessions of cassava are maintained throughout the world, 7500 in South America. Apart from the collection maintained at CIAT, the Brazilain collection is the largest and most complete. It consists of cultivated cassava and wild relatives conserved in the field and in-vitro culture. However information on cassava germplasm in South America is insufficient. The establishment of an international network for cassava genetic resources should promote the adoption of common strategies for the conservaton, characterization and evaluation of cassava germplasm.
