24 Colletotrichum lindemuthianum and 40 Phaeoisariopsis griseola isolates, the causal agents of anthracnose and angular leaf spot disease in beans, respectively, were analysed using a set of five polymorphic RAPD markers. The genetic distance data derived therefrom were combined with pathogenicity data to develop a model of virulence evolution. The data obtained seem to confirm the existence of regionally delimited pathogen lineages, as was inferred previously from the virulence spectrum on a set of differential bean varieties.
