Fattening on ground was organized for 100 heads male yearlings weaned in 1990, 125 heads in 1991 and 150 heads in 1992 from Palas Merino breed aiming to obtain a total gain of 20 kg/head during a fattening period of 120 days and a mean daily gain of 0.170 kg. Fattening was thus organized so that adaptation to the new feeding conditions and husbandry was of 15 days, proper fattening period was of 80 days and the finishing period was of 25 days. It was provided a serviceable housing room of 0.6 square metres/head during the adaptation period; 0.8 square metre during the proper fattening period and 1.0 square metres/head during the finishing period. Feeding front was 0.15 m/head during the adaptation and 0.25 m/head for the other two periods. The total gains obtained were: 21.58 kg/head in 1990; 22.70 kg/head in 1991 and 20.92 kg/head in 1992 under the conditions of a feeding regime which assured a daily mean consumption of 1.0 nutritive units and 147 grams digestible raw protein. The mean daily gain was 0.180 kg/head in 1990, 0.189 kg/head in 1991 and 0.174 kg/head in 1992; financial results were positive, achieving a profit rate of 4.15-11.81 per cent.
