The spring phytoplankton (April 3-19, 1990) of the Danube between Izmail and Linz was studied. As regards the species composition, cell numbers and biomass, the green algae and predominantly Chlorococcales occupied an important place in the phytoplankton assemblages. The response of these algae to non-point impact on the Danube was also registered. Chlorococcales were represented by 178 taxa (170 species, 5 varieties and 3 forms of 60 genera). The representatives of genera Scenedesmus, Monoraphidium, Tetrastrum, Lagerheimia, Pseudokirchneriella, Kirchneriella and Pseudodictyosphaerium dominate. The broadly distributed species were Monoraphidium arcuatum, M. contortum, M. komarkovae, Scenedesmus communis, S. acuminatus, S. ecornis, S. intermedius, Micractinium pusillum, Monoraphidium griffithii, Actinastrum hantzschii, Dictyosphaerium pulchellum, Tetrastrum glabrum, Hyaloraphidium contortum, Monoraphidium irregulare and Lagerheimia genevensis. Regarding their number and biomass Chlorococcales contributed significantly to the green algal and to the total phytoplankton assemblages.
