Some interesting observations on desmids (Conjugatophyceae)
1994
Hindak, F. (Slovenska Akademia Vied, Bratislava (Slovakia). Botanicky Ustav) | Hindakova, A.
Morphological variation of cells and life cycle in 4 desmid species were studied and documented by drawings. In a laboratory culture of Mesotaenium endlicherianum short pseudofilaments formed and the chloroplast divided into more than 2 pieces (4-8). Empty cell walls were visible particularly in pseudofilaments. In Actinotaenium borgeanum (SKUJA) KOUWETS et COESEL (syn. Penium borgeanum SKUJA) typical H-shaped to pillow-like zygotes were observed. During zygospore germination in Cosmarium laeve RABENH. the protoplast divided into 2 portions, each containing a pyrenoid. Each of the daughter protoplasts developed into a vegetative cell. Nothocosmarium obliquum f. tatricum (GUTW.) CEDERGR. is characterized by asymmetrical cells and by a single chloroplast with one pyrenoid in vegetative cells. For these characters the genus Nothocosmarium RACIBORSKI is considered a separate taxon (apart from Cosmarium ) with a systematic position near the genera Spondylosium and Sphaerozosma.
