Yellow pigments of the flowers of Carthamus tinctorius

From the hygienic point of view the use of synthetic yellow dyes is rather problematic. It is necessary to find a natural yellow water-soluble pigment as a substitute for synthetic dyes. The florets of the flower of Carthamus tinctorius contain large amounts of red and yellow pigments. In this study attention was paid to the isolation of yellow pigments only. Dried samples were ground to a fine powder from which the yellow pigments were extracted with ethanol. The content of the yellow pigments was about 30 % of the dry matter of florets. The colour intensity of the pigment concentrate was 13.7 times higher as compared to Sunset Yellow. TLC of the concentrate proved the presence of 3 yellow substances and a trace amount of the red pigment carthamin. Absorption spectra of the crude extract, pigment concentrate and TLC-separated colour zones were measured. According to the absorption spectra a high purity of the ethanol-extracted pigments can be assumed.
