From 1988-1990, the effect of different fertilization rates on the changes of inorganic nitrogen (N) fractions in the soil were investigated in experiments conducted under field conditions on fluvi-eutric gleysol. The changes were realised concerning the level of inorganic N fractions content in the soil before the experiments began. Precipitation had the main influence on the content of inorganic fractions of N up to the 6-leaf stage. At the subsequent growth stages up to full maturity, the inorganic N fractions content changed depending on the N uptake of winter wheat plants. Our results confirmed that for N fertilization it is important to take into account not only the inorganic N content in the soil, but also the uptake of N by winter wheat plants during their growth period
