Some basic factors affecting agricultural production in surrounding villages of Huai-Hongkrai [Thailand]

Public health status of the farmers in Paphai and Maepong was about the same and better than Maehongkrai. Majority of the respondents had received compulsory education and obtained training in agriculture. The average cultivated area per farm household was at 10.5 rai in Paphai, 7.8 rai in Maepong and 6.3 rai in Maehongkrai. Water source for agriculture in Maehongkrai was better when compared to Paphai and Maepong. Other yields of off-season crops such as corn, shallot and groundnuts in Maehongkrai were found to be higher than in Paphai and Maepong. Livestock raising in the villages for home consumption consisted of hogs, cattle and poultry. Technology of the farmers in all three villages was at the same level with an emphasis on more crop production than livestock production. Information of the farmers in the three villages was different. Important problems in dealing with agricultural production consisted of poor soil conditions; insect pests and animal diseases with high cost of production, lack of knowledge and technology in management; insufficient irrigation system and inadequacy of improved varieties of crops and animal breeds. Marketing problems were on low product prices especially in garlic and red onion or shallot and instability of market demands.
