Tissue culture propagation of papaya (Carica papaya)

Rapid clonal propagation of papaya was obtained by culturing apices of papaya plants on a modified Murashige and Skoog's medium. Individual apices were established on MS medium containing 5 microM kinetin alone or with 0.5 microM NAA. After 2 months, the cultured apices were transferred to the proliferation medium containing 2 microM BA and 1 microM NAA, which caused 5-10 fold increase in total number of plants during each 3 week period. Plantlets about 2-3 cm in length were transferred to the rooting media with 5 microM NAA or 7.5 microM IBA. The complete plantlets were transferred to vermiculite and successfully transplanted in the field.
