Assessment of resistance to major cocoa diseases
1993
Wheeler, B.E.J. (Imperial College at Silwood Park, Berks (United Kingdom))
Attempts to look at future ways for screening the considerable number of individual plants of Theobroma cacao L. which exist in field genebanks for resistance to the pathogens which cause major diseases. The three areas of apparent difficulties are: Variability of the pathogen, problems of scale in relation to the germplasm collection, and the challenge of devising tests which are both rapid and appropriate in scale to the material available. Assessing resistance is considered in two parts - the progress which has been made on pathogen variability is briefly reviewed and most emphasis is placed on the challenge of devising tests of resistance.
