Historical movements of cacao, probably from a restricted genetic base, led to numerous selections which are regarded as germplasm. Summarises collecting work from 1930-1988 excluding Brazil from 1968 onwards. The Peruvian collections which are important in breeding are used to illustrate uncertainties in genetic diversity even in intensively used material. Summarises the composition of two international cacao genebanks. There is a need to identify and conserve Criollos. Outlines priorities in collecting uncultivated cacao, with comments on collecting methodology. Discusses the needs for a database of information on germplasm and analysis of within and between population diversity.
