Criteria for groundwater protection in karst regions
1995
Milanovic, P. (Energoprojekt, Beograd (Yugoslavia). Hidroinzenjering)
It is evident that protection zone system concerning the karst regions can not be based on same criteria as it is for the non karstic aquifers. The conditions of the groundwater protection occurring in karstic aquifers depend upon many factors of which the following two are considered to be the most important: the groundwater flow velocities are very fast and self purification capacity is limited. The most common zoning system in nonkarstic areas of European countries, and also in Yugoslavia (Regulations issued 1989), consists of three zones. The zoning concept generally is based on two parameters: groundwater resistance time and distance till intake structure. Because of specificity and hydrogeological individuality of karst aquifers, the proposals suggested in the article are concerned with four protection zones. The water quality monitoring was pointed out as an out as important task in karst groundwater protection policy.
