Influence of metal ions on growth kinetics and internal pH regulation of Clostridium perfringens

Increasing concentrations of Na+ and K+ in synthetic culture medium resulted in a progressively longer lag-phase and in a lower specific growth rate of Clostridium perfringens type A. Na+ and K+ inhibition thresholds were 900 mM and 150 mM respectively. Ionophores additions in growing cultures demonstrated the specific influence of those two ions. The cells were insensitive to a CCCP addition. Mesurements of internal pH demonstrated a low level of pH homoeostasis at external pH values below 8.
