Most known Belgian locations with Sison amomum (Apiaceae) were revisited to investigate the present distribution of the species. The area in Belgium clearly declined, but disappeared not, as has been suspected by some people. Sison finds a refuge in road verges, mainly on the ditch banks. The species probably occurred earlier most frequently along hedges and hedgebanks and along unmown road verges beside unmetalled roads. Sison occurs in impoverished and rough Arrhenatheretums. For Belgium we can conclude that Sison is ascribed a CR/CSR-position within the C-S-R model of primary ecological strategies (GRIME, 1977). Well-adapted mowing regimes, replanting of hedges and hedgebanks and cleaning the ditches from time to time, seem to be the most important management actions needed to protect the species against further decline.
