Between 1983 and 1985 the surveys for the first Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) were conducted. In 1988 the major results of this survey covering the whole Swiss area with a 1 x 1 km grid were published. Based on the first NFI we now present as a supplement a detailed report on the 30 most common forest tree species in Switzerland. Besides distribution maps, this report shows the frequency (stem count, standing volume) of individual species, together with site and stand aspects: region, elevation, stage of vegetation, type of relief, exposure, inclination, diameter classes, proportion of mixture, admixed tree species, stand age, forest type, stage of development, and regeneration method
