Effect of premilking disinfection of pipeline milking systems on the bacterial contamination of raw milk
1996
Olkonen, A. | Henno, M. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
There are many dairy farms in Estonia where pipeline milking systems are very long (150...250m) and incorrectly designed. The temperature of the washing solution in these systems quickly falls below 40 deg C, which reduces washing efficiency. The primary task of this study was to investigate the influence of pipeline premilking disinfection on the bacterial contamination of raw milk on forementioned farms. Premilking rinsing of the whole milk-line with chlorine disinfectant solution minimized bacterial contamination of raw milk and increased production of milk with a plate count at less than 100 000 bacteria/ml to 91.7 per cent. After such treatment the pipeline must be drained, but there is no need to rinse the system with tap water
