Utilization of the Aleppo Pine Wood from cuttings and fire destroyed forests
1988
Rousodimos, G. (Ministry of Agriculture, Athens (Greece). Forest Research Inst.)
An evaluation of the Aleppo pine wood quality is undertaken, based on the Forest Research Institute studies in comparison with the known softwoods. It is concluded that Aleppo pine wood is medium in density, light brown, to reddish brown with an attractive figure made by the contrast between springwood and latewood. It is also hard and strong, with durable heartwood and easily permeable sapwood. The wood from the burnt forests is dried and blue stained quickly, but its strength and the other characteristics do not change for long time. Insect attack however, which take place shortly after the fire, finally makes the timber useless for the end uses. The wood is recommended for uses like railway sleepers, mining, fencing, flooring and boat building.
