Competition between weeds and onions grown from seedling bulbs

The onion's ability to compete against weeds is very weak, so it has to be protected during the whole vegetation period. This was proved by the result of the onion-weeds competition experiment in 1994. From one part of the experimental plots the weeds were removed by hand during 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 weeks after the emergence, the other part was kept weedy during the same period. At the end of the vegetation period the yield was measured and analysis of variance was carried out. The results showed a close connection between the yield amount and the length of weedy period. To prevent the yield loss onions need to be kept weedfree for 8 weeks after emergence. When the removal of weeds is delayed in this time of vegetation period the yield decrease by half
