Anthrax has not been observed in Nograd county for 50 years. Several anthrax outbreaks were observed in cattle, horse and goat stocks near to the Slovakian border in the summer of 1995. The causative agent could be entered onto the affected area due to the rise of River Ipoly following intensive rains observed before the first outbreaks, The disease was characterized by a very short course. It was diagnosed in the administrative area of 7 villages, on 10 pastures and 5 back-yards. Of the nearly 2000 susceptible animals, 136 adult cattle, 3 horses and 2 goats died within one month. Round 20 000 susceptible animals were vaccinated in the infected area along the 162 km long border area in a 10 km bright belt on the day of the first diagnosis and after the run of the disease. Treatment of sick animals and veterinary administrative control measures executed parallel with the vaccination supported the effectiveness of the control. Thanks to the effective and beneficial collaboration between veterinary and public health organizations, human disease was not observed in spite of the great number of outbreaks
