In Hungary, the cultivation trends which have dominated since the middle of the eighteenth century indicate a changing approach to soil conservation. In the current stagnating period of sustainable cultivation there have been more damages to soil than ever before, due to the pressure of energy saving. The present paper examines the effects of conventional, multitraffic and sustainable cultivation on the soil, its quality and energy demand, according to the aspects of soil protection. From the results of the examinations we can conclude that on a given soil the damage, as well as energy costs, can be reduced effectively by preventing compaction and adapting to the soil water content
