Inglés. There are many constraints found in the application of artificial insemination in order to improve the genetic merits of buffaloes. One of the major constraints is difficulty in detecting oestrus, since silent oestrus is quite common among buffaloes. The aim of the study is to use oestrus synchronization technique using an intravaginal progesterone implant for optimizing artificial insemination results. A total of 60 heads of buffalo cows belonging to farmers in Yogyakarta surrounding area, were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups. Treatment I, using CIDR (controlled internal drug release, Eazibred TM, AHI Plastic Moulding Co., Hamilton, New Zealand) inserted intravaginally for 15 days; treatment II, using CIDR for 9 days and 25 mg prostaglandin F2 alpha (Lutalyse TM, dinoprost, Upjohn, Kalamazoo, USA) which was injected intramuscularly on day 8 of the treatment; while treatment III, as control, with an empty implant was inserted intravaginally for 15 days. Oestrus detection was conducted following the implant removal, and artificial insemination with frozen semen was done after the animal showing oestrus symptoms. Gynaecological examination was performed to determine reproductive status and fertility rates of the buffaloes not exhibiting oestrus for more than 3 cycles. Results of the present study indicated that the intravaginal retention of CIDR was perfect (100 percent), oestrus induction definitely happened (100 percent) within less than 72 hours. The conception rates were between 35 and 40 percent and not different with the result of natural cycle (P0.05) and shortened the period of treatment to conception (60.2 +-4.8 and 58.4 +-5.2 hours versus 384.4 +- 44.8 hours, (P0.01), and no alteration in the length of oestrus cycle following treatment. This study also proved that administration of prostaglandin F2 alpha in conjunction with CIDR treatment is not effective in increasing the efficiency of oestrus synchronization using CIDR. It is concluded that the use of oestrus synchronization technique using intravaginal CIDR will be able to optimize the results of artificial insemination and to increase reproductive efficiency in the buffalo
