Effect of salinity on transformation of urea and ammonium sulfate in calcareous soil

The transformation of urea (U) and ammonium sulfate (AS) in an artificially salinized calcareous soil was evaluated. It was found that high NH4-N concentrations were measured in soil-amended with (U) as compared to (AS) for all test salinity levels. The nitrification rates (NR) of both N fertilizers were negatively and significantly correlated with soil salinity (r or equal to 0.972** at P=0.01), while they were positively correlated (r or equal to 0.991** ) with incubation period. However, the nitrification and (NR) of (AS) were significantly higher than that of (U) under saline conditions
