Anti-knock properties, characterised by octane number, are one of the most important parameters of fuel quality. The change of the research octane numbers (RON) of various ethanol-gasoline blends were investigated. Experiments were made on single cylinder test engine unit UIT-85 using standard method as specified by State standards (GOST 8226-82). Ethanol-gasoline blends were made using three alcohols with a different composition and three commercial gasolines. The research octane number measurements showed that the octane improvement of each of the alcohols were most pronounced with the lower octane gasoline. Raw spirits used in the investigations showed a non-linear relationship between octane number and octane improvement.
