[Use of biological fuels in internal combustion engines]

Scientific research of biofuels since 1980 to the present time is reviewed. The raw materials for the production of biofuels are analysed, their advantages are explained. The research carried out at the Motor-Vehicle Department of the LUA is described. Composition, qualities and use of such biofuels as bio-ethanol, rape oil, wood gas and bio-gas are discussed in details. It is concluded that (1) the production of biofuels and their use in motors will favourably influence the development of Latvia's economy; (2) further studies are required on biofuel production and use in internal combustion engines
