The study was conducted at MMSU [Mariano Marcos State University], Batac, Ilocos Norte [Philippines] to monitor yield trends, assess fertility changes over time and evaluate the sustainability (nutrient, pest) of successful production systems. BPI Ri 10 was planted in 1992 WS [wet season] followed by tomato, garlic, mungbean, corn and sweet pepper in DS. The residual effect of fertilizer applied to the previous dry season crops on rice yield, dry matter and total NPK uptake of rice was minimal. The changes in OM [organic matter], N, P, K, and S were monitored in one crop cycle, i.e., rice + dry season crops. In the rice-tomato sequence, available N, P, S, and OM increased but available K decreased. In the rice-garlic and rice-mungbean crop sequences, available P, K, and S decreased, while there was a minimal build-up of N and OM. In rice-corn sequence, OM and available N, P, K and S reduced. On the other hand, N, S, and OM, increased in the rice-sweet pepper cropping sequence. Based on initial nutrient balance analysis, unaccounted N is high for rice-corn (338 kg/ha) and rice-sweet pepper (335 kg/ha). High recovery of N, P and K was found in rice-mungbean. Further evaluation of the different crop sequences will be done by including the measurable nutrient input and output in the different systems. Insect pest population were generally low in all cropping sequences. Nilaparvata lugens is the dominant insect pest observed. Rice blast and bacterial leaf blight were also observed. Several predators, e.g., spiders, water strider, denselfly, earwig, and coccinellids, were also observed. Further study will be focused on the specific shift in insect and weed population, and disease incidence in each crop sequence
