Environmental impacts of land use systems within the western Mindanao State University, experimental forest at upper La Paz, Zamboanga City [Philippines]
1995
Barre, A.S.
The results showed that the WMSU [Western Mindanao State Univ., Philippines] Experimental Forest is a marginal second growth forest with few patches of old growth forest stand. Logging, followed by extensive and unsustainable upland farming practices, caused the denudation of the area. Migration which further degraded the bio-geo-physical resources in the area, stands as an obstacle to resource development through natural regeneration. New land use systems in the area, such as the fighting cock breeding, added pressure unto the already heavily burdened natural resources, threatening its very existence. Immediate action is needed to protect the remaining resources in the area. This will not only benefit those who directly depend on such resources, but also to its adjacent protected area, the Zamboanga Watershed Reservation
